How does the Bonus Mars system work, whether responsible or not?

Bonus Mars is a system that adjusts insurance premiums according to the behavior of the insured. This adjustment is made on an annual due date based on the insured’s liability claim. The basic premium will be reduced if there are no claims and increased if there is more than one claim.

For the first subscription, the factor is equal to 1 and you pay the base premium. After that, the reduction / increase coefficient will be applied to the basic premium every year.

The weight of negligence claims is much heavier on the amount of premiums than the reductions obtained in the year without claims. Therefore, the benefits of respectful and gentle driving. Photo DR

Claim-free 5% less per year

If there are no accidents, insurance premiums will drop by 5% each year. If you pay 1 in the first year, you pay 1×0.95 or 0.95 in the second year.

The next year will be 0.95×0.95, or 0.90 and so on. In the best case, it will take 13 years to reach the maximum bonus of 0.50. According to the insurance company, if you reach this bonus and continue for 3 years at this point, the first accident will not be penalized.

How to calculate the penalty?

For each responsible accident, the insurance company will add a 25% penalty. If the premium is 1, then the first accident will result in a premium of 1 x 1.25, or 1.25. If the bonus is 0.68, the cost of the next bonus will be 0.68 x 1.25, or 0.85.

If the responsibility for the accident is shared with other vehicles, the penalty will be 12.5% (thus multiply by 1.125). If you accumulate multiple responsible accidents, the maximum penalty is 3.5. This means paying 3.5 times the basic premium.

Insurance companies can apply premium increases if the insured is involved in an accident under certain conditions. In case of hit-and-run after an accident, raise 100%, when the insured is in an accident. Photo DR

Not all vehicles are eligible for Bonus Mars

The Bonus Mars system applies to all land vehicles, with the exceptions stated in the insurance policy.

Exceptions are especially two or three wheels (up to 125 cm3 or 11 kW output), collector cars (more than 30 years old, collection gray card because you need to own a classic car as the first car), general Interest (firefighters, SAMU, police) and agricultural and forestry machinery.

Automatic claims excluded from bonuses-malus

Bonus Mars calculation does not take into account all charges. Your responsibilities must be fully or partially involved (+ 25% or + 12.5%).

The excluded claims are: Parking accidents without a identified third party, car theft, car fire, glass breakage. To be on the safe side, after two years without a responsible claim, the reduction factor will disappear and return to 1.

Finally, if the insurance is changed, the bonus Mars coefficient should be maintained and the insurer should issue a statement of information.
